What destroys productivity?

What prevents programmers from working in comfortable conditions and being productive? Let’s try to figure it out.

Constant meetings

These pauses reduce the productivity of programmers the most. It’s not so easy for a developer to get back to what he was working on before being interrupted. He needs to tune in again, and then slowly trace his thought to the place where he stopped. This can easily take more than half an hour. And the more such pauses, the less desire to work, the lower the quality of the code and the more bugs.

If somebody interrupts the programmer’s work all morning, do not be surprised that his whole day will be unproductive. Moreover, a programmer cannot complete a task normally when he knows that he will soon have to interrupt. Therefore, if they have a glider in the next hour or two, they will not be able to advance in solving the problem, since most of them take much more time.

That’s why try to hold such meetings at the very beginning of the day or, for example, right before lunch to avoid unnecessary pauses during the day.

The absence of praise

This factor is quite high on the list, because it leads to tension in the team, that can completely kill team productivity one day. The leader should not forget to praise, recognize and respect the work of the employee, which must be perceived, first of all, as a person.

Environment

Noise, movementThis may seem strange to those who do not work as a programmer, but the environment in which the developer works greatly affects his work. A small white noise, such as the noise of cars and trucks passing outside the window, helps programmers focus better. Therefore, many of us work with headphones!

Also, if someone constantly walks around the working place, it is very difficult to concentrate. It only adds extra stress and increases the thoughts that you will be interrupted during work.

A variety of tools and equipment

Every day, developers use many tools to program, download, and combine code. The more automation the better. It is clear to everyone that the use of “ancient” development tools will negatively affect productivity. It also matters if the programmer is working on a computer with a large screen or on a laptop. Given the cost of equipment and the salaries of programmers, even an increase in productivity of 5% will already be worth any investment at this stage. Just provide your developers with the tools and equipment that they need (the equipment is individual for each, but the tools are the same for the whole team).

Incredibly tight deadlines

The last factor is related to the habit of managers to ask developers about approximate possible deadlines for the project, then force them to reduce these deadlines as much as possible, and then for no reason consider them deadlines. Also, managers believe that since programmers themselves “set” such approximate deadlines, then they consider this a deadline for the project, and therefore these dates can already be transferred to senior management.
